2,000 YEARS TOO LATE

EPHESUS, Turkey -- The Spring day progressed from cool to warm, so I sat and rested on a smooth cube of cut marble, wishing in vain for shade from the ancient columns and porticos that stood nearby. There was no roof, save for the blue Aegean sky.

I took a swig from my plastic pint-sized water jug which I kept in my canvas back pack and removed the wrapper from a nutrition candy bar, one of many I had brought from the U.S. before my visit here. . . . more
